I don't know if I have to present Akira Kurosawa, even if you don't know anything about japanese's cinema, you have to hear one time about Akira Kurosawa. This filmmaker is the director of the famous "Seven Samurai" (1954) or "Rashomon" (1951) (winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival), his influence on actuals directors is enormous. He was the director of 32 movies, as you could imagine some of his movies were real commercial failure, like Dodes'Kaden, his first movie in color, and maybe his more experimental. He never shot before and he tried every things he could imagine, like painting with different color the shadow of the set film. Thanks to that, the movie gets a ton psychedelic, and very dreamlike. In this film, we're following different story of marginal characters who live in a rubbish dump. In this characters, there is for example Rokuchan, young boy who thinks he is a tram conductor, but without tram. Rokuchan will met lot of strange people, incest, poverty, and madness are themes that Kurosawa will approach in this movie This film is a trip in madness, there is no sense everywhere, but this is not important. Witch is important is to let himself to be transported and enjoy this new world proposed by the Master, Akira Kurosawa.

I saw Rashomon a while back and I though it was one of the most beautifully bleak films I had ever seen. I have a huge Akira Kurosawa boxset at my house so I probably own Dodes'Kaden but I am yet to watch it. I'll most likely check out Seven Samurai or Ran first.

Rashomon is a beautiful movie, the narration is just amazing and the editing is just impressive for the 50's. I've not seen Ran, if you see it before me, could you please do a small review ? And is you liked Rashomon I'm sure you'll love Seven Samourai is kind of the same atmosphere.
I hope you'll like Dodes'kaden too, but I'm warning you, it's REALLY different of his others movies.
